This Week

September 24, 2018 Introduction

The Center for Data Science (ds.cs.umass.edu & @UMassDataSci) is excited to launch another year of Data Science Tea events. Data Science Teas will be held on Mondays or Tuesdays from 4-5pm in CS Building Rooms 150 & 151. The first Tea will be held on Monday, September 24th.

The Teas host technical conversations about topics in data science. Our first Tea will feature a series of introductory and overview talks to kick off the Fall semester:

  • Executive Director Brant Cheikes will present an overview of the Center for Data Science, and describe upcoming programs and activities that will benefit graduate students

  • Overviews of some of the amazing research computing resources available in the College

  • CICS faculty will introduce themselves and summarize their education and research activities

  • DS Tea & MLFL organizers will present highlights of upcoming talks

Tea, coffee, tea sandwiches, and cakes will be served. Bring your own mug to help reduce waste!

About

Tea, refreshments and informal technical conversations about topics in data science. It is usually held at 4pm on Mondays in rm 151 in the Computer Science Building.

The format of this time can take on multiple forms:

  • poster session
  • one speaker for the hour
  • multiple speakers with about 10-minute presentations
  • ...or, the most fun and chaotic: Presenters are simply at the whiteboard, talking about their latest idea informally while writing on the white board, with 10-15 people gathered around them standing.

These events are free and open to the public on a first come, first serve basis.
