Applying AI technology to solve problems for the UMass Amherst campus community.

PROPOSE A PROJECT FOR AI4UMASS

Are you working on impactful projects that could benefit from cutting-edge AI? UMass Amherst faculty and staff are invited to propose projects that will harness generative AI to solve everyday challenges and enhance the functioning of our campus to improve teaching, administration, research, service delivery, or other aspects of university functions.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

PROGRAM

AI4UMass is a student internship and innovation program managed by the Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in the Manning College of Information and Computer Science (CICS) in partnership with the Public Interest Technology Initiative (PIT@UMass)

Inspired by the broader “AI 4 The Commonwealth” state partnership program, AI4UMass is a campus-specific extension that brings together CICS undergraduates, university mentors, and project sponsors from across UMass.

Over the course of a 16-week paid internship, student teams work with faculty and staff to design, test, and implement practical AI solutions that improve how our campus works and learns.

Partners & Projects

Potential projects leverage generative AI to streamline operations and improve the delivery of services and programs for Massachusetts institutions and residents, including customer support, permit and license inquiries, regulatory document consulting, RFI responses summarizing, and more.

Participants

Open to both rising junior and senior undergraduate students in UMass Amherst CICS, applicants are evaluated based on academic performance, teamwork, communication skills, and project fit.

Selected students are paired with UMass mentors and faculty to define and build AI-powered solutions such as coding, testing, and refining tools for tasks in data engineering, machine learning, and analytics. This is a hands-on opportunity to grow as a developer, researcher, and collaborator while making a direct impact on your own university.
