About The Program
The AI for the Commonwealth Internship Program is an undergraduate internship program jointly managed by the Center for Data Science in the Manning College of Information and Computer Science (CICS) and the Public Interest Technology Initiative (PIT@UMass) at UMass Amherst. In partnership with The Massachusetts Executive Office of Technology Services and Security (EOTSS), we are recruiting a cohort of students to work with state institutions and UMass mentors to apply cutting-edge generative AI to solve real-world challenges for Massachusetts institutions and communities.
- 16-week paid internship
- Open to rising junior and senior undergraduate students in UMass Amherst CICS
- Student teams are mentored by full-time CICS and PIT@UMass faculty and staff
- Student teams directly collaborate with state institution stakeholders and UMass mentors to improve the delivery of services and programs for Massachusetts institutions and communities

APplication process
Please note that the application process is subject to change from year-to-year.
- Go to the top of this page to apply once applications are open. The application asks for your background (skills, coursework, and interests), short answer questions, and a resume/CV, and an unofficial copy of your transcript.
- Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, looking for alignment with state agency interests and projects, academic performance, teamwork, leadership, communication, and other professional skills.
- Applicants whose skills and experience are a good fit for the projects we have planned will be invited to a 30-minute interview with UMass faculty and staff.
- Applicants will receive a final decision within 2 weeks of their interview.
- Accepted applicants will receive an offer letter which must be signed and returned within five business days.
- All applicants will be notified by email when the positions for the program are filled. Note that due to the volume of applications, staff cannot respond to individual requests about application status.
Minimum qualifications
- Junior or rising senior majoring or minoring in Computer Science/Informatics
- Ability to work successfully on a software development team
- Teamwork, communication, and leadership skills gained through work experience, extracurriculars, or coursework
- Interest in and commitment to working on projects for the common good and in the public interest
This is a significant commitment, and an important partnership between the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. An offer to this program means that we see you as a great fit for this program and we want to work with you. You are committing to:
- Working 10 hours a week during the spring semester
- Working 32 hours a week during the summer
- Staying for the duration of the program
