Media Cloud is an open-source platform for media analysis and research. Users can query the online news archive to investigate media attention and language. To expand the available toolchain, this team will build a model training pipeline that guides users in specifying an initial query, downloading and labeling sample content, and iteratively training a classifier model.
Save the Elephants is an organization that works to secure a future for elephants. This team is working with Save the Elephants to analyze drone-captured images of African elephants who are currently being negatively impacted by doubt and climate change. The team will use these images to develop models that help track elephants, monitor their health information, and prevent human-elephant conflict.
The Unity Research Computing Platform accelerates research from laptop-size to 1,000’s of cores and 100’s of graphics processing units (GPUs), and it has about 1400 GPUs that are often underutilized by user jobs. This team will develop an automated workflow to identify patterns in GPU utilization, summarize common issues, and categorize user profiles, for the purpose of providing timely intervention and effective user outreach.

Congratulations to Luna Dziewietin, DS4CG 2024 team member! Luna, a fourth-year undergraduate majoring in Informatics & Social Thought in Political Economy major and member of the DS4CG 2024 team, wins the Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement Award! IPA Transcription Project Awarded $20,000! The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) Transcription project is a collaborative effort between the UMass Amherst College of Humanities and Fine Arts’s Linguistics Department and the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences to create an AI-assisted analysis of phonological variation in English. This project has recently been awarded a $20,000 HFA/CICS Collaborative Seed Fund grant to support the development of an AI-powered speech recognition model designed to transcribe English speech into the IPA with high accuracy. To advance linguistic research by automating phonological analysis, improve transcription efficiency, and enable new applications in language education and speech therapy, are the main goals of this project. Furthermore, we celebrate intercollege collaboration and are excited at the new prospects and developments this award will facilitate in the future.
